Freddy shaping a surfboard in the Yugen bay

Start from how you
want to surf.

the board follows

Order a proven model in standard dimensions, or book a 60-minute Design Session and we work back from your surfing to the right board.

Almost everyone starts
with a Design Session.

How a Yugen board is commissioned

Most surfers I build for cannot quite name what their current board is doing wrong. The Design Session is the conversation that turns those observations into a clear specification. The straight order route is there for the rare case you already have the model, the dimensions and the construction worked out.

01 The main path

Book a Design Session and we figure out the board together.

60 minutes, one to one with Freddy. We start from how you want to surf and what your current board is doing wrong, then work back to the model, the dimensions, the construction and the fin setup. You walk away with a written design brief and a final price. $150, credited toward the board if you commission one.

02 If you already know

You know the model and the dimensions you want.

Order the standard size from the model page and we shape it to order. Same build, the design is just already resolved.

Felt in the water

From board clients
Pure magic. Took it out at Narrabeen on a proper barrel day and it felt like the board already knew what I wanted to do. Every turn, every section, it was just there.
Charly Bespoke Board Client · Northern Beaches
Board is so good! Barrelled first wave. And again later. Perfect replica, for the moment I jumped on to paddle, volume and balance was perfect. Waves were pretty good too. Fly weight lite.

Hi Freddy, just surfed my board. So good and was easy to duckdive and paddle!

Start from how
it feels.

Most people start board-shopping from litres. The honest starting point is what you feel on the board you ride now. Does it paddle easily but resist a sharper turn? Feel fast in good waves but stall on a small day? Hold at speed but feel like work day to day? Those observations are worth more than guessing volume.

From there, two questions translate what you feel into design choices: how the board generates speed, and how it turns.

01

How do you want to generate speed?

The board carries you

Speed comes from volume and flow. You focus on line and placement, the board does the work underneath you.

You drive the board

Speed comes from your input. The board accelerates when you push against it. More work, more response.

Most surfers sit somewhere in between.

02

How do you want to turn?

Drawn-out arcs

Rail-to-rail surfing. Connecting turns in one continuous line across an open face.

Sharp, pivotal turns

Quick changes of direction. Fitting a turn into a tight pocket. Putting it vertical when a section asks for it.

You do not have to pick a box. The point is to describe the response you want. From there, the Design Session translates it into model, dimensions, rocker, rails, bottom shape and fins.

What you walk away with

You leave with a written brief.

At the end of the session you have a one-page design brief on your phone. Model, dimensions, construction, fin setup, final price and the build window. Below is a sample of what one looks like for a surfer who wants more snap out of an average beachie day.

Yugen Design Brief Sample / illustrative only

Surfer brief

Intermediate, rides a stock 5'10" thruster. Loves the easy paddle and how it draws lines on a good day, but it bogs on average banks and feels heavy through quick direction changes.

Model
Fireball
Dimensions
5'10" x 18 3/4" x 2 1/2" / 28.73L
Construction
PU / polyester, sanded finish
Fin setup
5-fin (thruster as default, quad on faster days)
Indicative price
$1,170 (base $1,130 + 5-fin $40)
Indicative build
4 to 6 weeks from sign-off

Why it fits this surfer

Slightly lower entry rocker keeps the early-paddle they already like. The fuller nose and single-to-double bottom hold pace through flat sections. The 5-fin option lets them keep a thruster feel for everyday surfs and switch to quad when a clean swell shows up.

Yours will look different. The structure is the same.

Frequently asked.

Can I order without a Design Session?
Yes. If you already know the model and the standard dimensions, order straight from the model page. Every board is still shaped to order. The Design Session is for when the design is not yet resolved.
When should I book a Design Session?
Book one when your current board feels limiting and you cannot quite name why, when the right model is not obvious, when you want custom dimensions, construction or fin options, or when you have an idea and want it pressure-tested before you commit to the build.
How long does a board take?
Typically 4 to 6 weeks from final payment, though timing varies with the queue. You get the current estimate before you commission the board.
What does the $150 Design Session cover?
A 60-minute one-to-one with Freddy. We take your surfing, your current-board feedback and your regular waves and work back to a clear board specification: model, dimensions, construction, fin setup, price and build estimate. If you commission a board, the full $150 is credited toward the final price. If you attend and decide not to order, it is retained as the consultation fee.
What is the cancellation policy?
Fully refundable if you cancel more than 24 hours before the session. An attended session is not refundable if you decide not to commission a board.
Can I do the Design Session remotely?
Yes. In person on Sydney's Northern Beaches or by video call. Interstate shipping can be arranged for the finished board.

Not sure a new board
is the answer?

Sometimes the board is the thing, sometimes a couple of technical fixes get you most of the way there. The free Progression Quiz takes a few minutes, names your current key limiter, and sends you a 6-week plan. Then you decide whether equipment is the question worth solving first.
